If you know your Greek history, you have surely read the story of Narcissus. He was a young man who fell in love with his own reflection. It was all about him and how great he was. Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
Jump forward to the year 2009. Obama is our new Narcissus. It’s all about him. Obama loves to talk about…Obama!
Just an interesting insight to our Narcissist-in-Chief. He is not in love with his reflection…though he is on television enough to question that… but he does love to hear himself talk about…himself.
Dan Gainor, Vice President for the Media Research Center, has painstakingly counted the number of times Obama has talked about…himself. In just 41 speeches, Gainor found Obama to speak about himself exactly 1,198 times. Didn’t Obama proclaim “its not about me” in several speeches?
Gainor breaks the count down by documenting how many times Obama used the word “I” and “me.” The “I”s totaled 1,121 and the “me”s only got 77. Obama loves to talk about Obama.
The sad fact is this total is only for 41 speeches that only include Obama’s 34 weekly addresses and 7 major speeches. If you were to add the hundreds of Obama’s other speeches…well, you get the point.
What were the stats for the Obamathon this past Sunday? Gainor states : “The interviews went off as expected. Obama kept his “I” on the nation’s problems. He mustered 387 personal mentions in just 82 minutes of air time. Forget the economy, health care, racism or whatever. Every 13 seconds, Obama was talking about … Obama.”
Gainor also points our that Obama has had nearly three times the number of interviews either George Bush or Bill Clinton had at this time in his presidency. The New York Times Caucus blog reported: “As of his seven-month in office mark in August, he had done 114 interviews, compared to 37 by former President George W. Bush and 41 by former president Bill Clinton.”
It’s no wonder Obama’s ears are so big. They love hearing Obama talk about…OBAMA.
