Affirmative action strike again. The Department of Justice is forcing the Dayton, Ohio Police Department to lower its testing standards because not enough African-American police recruits are passing the exam. Even the local NAACP is against the lower standards.
DAYTON — The Dayton Police Department is lowering its testing standards for recruits.
It’s a move required by the U.S. Department of Justice after it says not enough African-Americans passed the exam.
This is the same thing that is happening to the New York Fire Department. Some recruits couldn’t pass exams so the DOJ is lowering standards to help African-American recruits. These recruits couldn’t even pass an exam that asked simple questions like “what is the address on the picture” and “how many firefighters are on the scene?”
Dayton is in desperate need of officers to replace dozens of retirees. The hiring process was postponed for months because the D.O.J. rejected the original scores provided by the Dayton Civil Service Board, which administers the test.
Under the previous requirements, candidates had to get a 66% on part one of the exam and a 72% on part two.
The D.O.J. approved new scoring policy only requires potential police officers to get a 58% and a 63%. That’s the equivalent of an ‘F’ and a ‘D’.
“It becomes a safety issue for the people of our community,” said Dayton Fraternal Order of Police President, Randy Beane. “It becomes a safety issue to have an incompetent officer next to you in a life and death situation.”
I wonder if these recruits will be required to know their “10-codes” or will they be allowed to carry a cheat sheet with them while out in the streets? Law enforcement recruits are required to know these important codes before graduating the police academy.
“The NAACP does not support individuals failing a test and then having the opportunity to be gainfully employed,” agreed Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward.
The D.O.J. and Civil Service Board declined Dayton’s News Source’s repeat requests for interviews. The lower standards mean 258 more people passed the test. The city won’t say how many were minorities.
It’s official. Whites are smarter than blacks. How’s that for a slap in the NAACP’s face.

We should be thankful for the tests that weed these folks out. Now if the tests are definitely racially biased (this is one possible scenario not actually discussed so openly here) as opposed to the tests being biased against people that will likely not be able to perform, that would be something to have a contention over.
It is the NAACP and others stirring up trouble wanting entitlements for all but “white” people, (oh help us please, there is another racist group with an avowed racist agenda).

NAACP is a racist organization by its own definition. How they handle that has been less than exemplary in review of their past examples, but they do good in many instances.
Affirmative action should mean education and equipping, not entitlements. Where and why has this all gone so wrongly? What stupidity is continually allowed that affirmative action means that quotas must be met? That isn’t affirmative action, it is ENTITLEMENT.

The changes made had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE. It had to do with retirees leaving the work-force and not enough recruits passing preliminary exams to fill their places.
What does this mean? It means our education system is in the shitter. No more, no less. Minorities had absolutely 0% involvement in the changes made. This is not affirmative action, this is replenishing the work force.
Having to accept less-qualified applicants mirrors the sad state of affairs in our schools. There was absolutely no agenda to employ any more or any less minorities for these roles.

I can’t believe the Department of Justice has the right to dumb down a Civil Service Test. Minorities are the people who aren’t passing the test…that means everyone but the white guys. White people are the only ones who are not considered in a minority group. Everyone should consider this action insulting. I guarentee someone is going to sue…as they did with the Boston Fire Department when they would not promote the white Fireman who DID pass the proper tests. When the black fireman could not pass the test..they threw it out. That’s not fair…and it’s not safe. I’m glad I don’t live in the Dayton area anymore.
Many have forgotten that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled on this issue. They ruled on the New Haven decision where white firefighters, who scored higher than their counterparts, were denied promotions because not enough minorities passed the exam. This seems to be a pattern for Obama’s DOJ. They are doing the same thing to the NYFD. It’s the results of political correctness and affirmative action policies.
Can you imagine how many cases will be thrown out of court because of the failure of the police force to properly fill out the paperwork? I hope Dayton will sue for the right to keep it’s standards high as was done in N.Y.

I am a black woman ( I HATE the term african american, but that is another issue) and I am AGAINST the lowering of the scores. This is not safe. I worked hard and graduated from high school as a junior. I graduated from college and I have an MBA and I am in school pursuing a 2nd Master’s Degree. Having said that, all it takes to pass a test is to study. Especially a test of such ease. Most places offer study guides for civil service exams or general topics to brush up on.
If many minorities can’t pass the test that means the education system (and the parents) have failed them. My kindergartener is speaking Spanish and she is 5. Education starts in the home and we can’t treat school as a daycare for our children. Check your child’s backpack every day to make sure homework has been done. But I digress. Test scores are to weed out those that possibly won’t perform to standard. Test scores are for a reason. Not everything is racially motivated. And to those of you that say I am being an ‘uncle tom’, think what you want. But, I didn’t work hard and will not have my kids work hard only to have our opportunities usurped by those who don’t desire to accomplish anything because they don’t want to put in the effort simply because the DOJ will intervene on their behalf when they fail.

Those individuals who work hard to obtain a great education and career are shorted when the government forces lower qualifications because some don’t take these test seriously. I just pray they never try to do this to doctors or airline pilots.

If a police cadet can’t pass a test that shows he/she has a understanding of the law, law enforcement techiniques and procedures, that proves he/she shouldn’t be in this particular field. I guess you wouldn’t apply the same standards to a physician or airline pilot? Would you allow a unqualified electrician to wire your house? How about a unqualified auto mechanic? You name three examples of police brutality and I can names a few thousand law enforcement officers killed by criminals yearly. I seriously doubt that that the ratio of police misconduct to police KIA is 3: 1000′s. There are tens of thousands police brutality reports filed yearly, however, only one cop (on average) per two and a half days is KIA. You do the math: a year has 365 days; hence, your argument, in this instance,has lost credibility–before this faux pas you were batting 100 percent. Oh, and another point, on the macabre side, not every cop KIA is at the hands of a criminal.

a new jersey police officer found guilty for shaking down drug dealers and gaving the money and drugs to minors in exchange for sex. police officers across the country break the law they are suppose to protect, but that is okay because he/she pass the test. a police officer can shot you in the back but that okay because he pass the test. a police officer can beat rodney king or rape my sister because he pass the test that’s okay. integrity is everthing when it comes to being a respectible upstanding officer so test scores do not make you a good officer or a good human being integrity does that!

Dave, do you know my history? All fields of employment have their bad apples. A few bad cops doesn’t make all cops bad. However, if someone is unable to pass a simple open-book exam, do you want them out on the streets with firearms? If they don’t know procedures or how to enforce laws, do you want a bunch of idiots out there doing a job they are not qualified to do. Most professions require a person to know about the field they represent. As I stated several times, physicians, pilots, electricians and a host of other professions require a person to know their job duties and to show this aptitude, one has to pass a test.

Dave, I’ve been in the law enforcement field for over 14 years. Integrity is part of the job but you also have to know the laws/procedures to do the job effectively. We are not talking about integrity in this article. We are talking about how the government is lowering qualifications to make a police force more diverse.
As I have clearly stated, professions have standards. I don’t want any unqualified physicials, airline pilots, auto mechanic, accountants, lawyers et al working in the communities. Now if you want a bunch of short bus police officers, who don’t know the law/procedures working in your community, you have that right.

Would you want a doctor who couldn’t pass his tests that proves he/she knows what they’re doing? Comparing an accounting exam to a brain surgeon is a terrible analogy.
