Zuccotti Park in New York’s financial district is decked out with posters and signs for the wide array of political viewpoints of the Occupy Wall Street protesters. The six-week-old movement has several Web sites to promote various perspectives. But just who are these protesters? What is their political ideology? Do they have jobs?
Costas Panagopoulos, a professor of political science at Fordham University, recently conducted a survey of the Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York.
Dr. Panagopoulos described the protesters as “disgruntled Democrats.” Sixty percent of those surveyed said they voted for Barack Obama in 2008, and about three-quarters now disapprove of Mr. Obama’s performance as president. A quarter said they were Democrats, but 39 percent said they did not identify with any political party. Eleven percent identified as Socialists, another 11 percent said they were members of the Green Party, 2 percent were Republicans and 12 percent say they identified as something else.
Questionnaires handed out by Dr. Panagopoulos’s team of 15 interviewers throughout the park were completed by 301 adults from Oct. 14 to Oct. 18. “I followed the academic protocols that colleagues of mine adopted in the past to survey demonstrations,” he said.
In the survey, 80 percent described themselves as liberal; half of those said they were extremely liberal.
Translation. 80% are socialist. Most Democrats are socialist but refuse to call themselves that just as they don’t call themselves liberals. Instead they say “progressive” which is just a political term for socialist.

Forty percent are members of a union household. (Nationally, in a recent New York Times/CBS News poll, 58 percent of the general public have attended college and 62 percent are employed, either full-time or part-time.)

I am so sick of that crap. I can and DO call myself “liberal” if by being liberal means all of the things I’ve spelled out (like being broad-minded, tolerant, culturally oriented, belief in equality, and non-religious).

What I do call myself is democratic. That means believing that religion and government should be separate and that a small percent of the wealthy should not be running the government and influencing policy to fit their own interests and ends (creating a plutarchy). I also believe that in a democratic society, the poor, old and citizens unable to work should be helped by the government to have a basic means of living instead of being left to die.
This in no way aligns with socialism, marxism, or communism or any other “ism’s” that favor the collective (government owns everything), and if it IS, then I will still take it over “religion” any day! Actually when you think about it, what the Teapublicans want (a religious Theocracy) is much more like communism and socialism. In their view, the christian religion ideology would influence all government policy, and the individual would have NO RIGHTS, except what the wealthy “leaders” (informed by the grace of god I suppose-but really in their own self interests) interpret they would or should have.
Sorry, have to disagree with you. There are 70 Democrats are allied with the American Socialist movement. Our president told us in his book that he sought out Marxist professors. His words and actions also prove he is a socialist. I base my opinions on facts and actions.
Liberals are anything but tolerant. Look at how they debate anyone who has different opinions for example. The reason calling yourself a liberal is so bad is because of your party’s history. They had to change it after being exposed as racist and segregationist. In the 1900′s, Liberals started calling themselves progressives but continued their racist agenda. They can’t help it. The Democrats were founded on slavery, segregation and secession.
I’m a conservative and believe that religion has no place in government as well. I also must point out that we don’t live in a democracy. We are a Republic as it is stated in the U.S. Constitution. As for you claim about the old and poor being left to die: We have social security, Medicare and Medicaid that makes sure these individuals won’t be left to die.
You really lack an understanding of the Tea Party. You do show your how “tolerant” you truly are. Nobody wants a religious Theocracy. They want smaller government and more individual freedoms. If you look at what you’ve stated, you will see where the socialist/Marxist claims arise. You, and most Democrats, want to redistribute others wealth (just not your own) to keep people dependent upon government. Hard to deny that Democrats/Liberals/Progressives/Socialist don’t love bigger government. Ever hear the term “tax and spend liberals?”
Where do you stand knowing Obama is the biggest corporate whore in political history? How do you feel about the unconstitutional individual mandate that forces Americans to buy a product or face a fine?

Liberals are still trying to convince the world that they are good people.
And more importantly that they are not Marxist/Socialist/Communist. So much so they created a new word Progressives because Liberal was not popular to use anymore.
They love to embrace Democracy and still don’t get it. They continue to repeat the error of their ways never learning from true History, only to revise it.

I would like to say I am not a Tea Party Member and an independent but the Democrat Party is now the Communist Party USA.
